Letters from Brigham Young and other papers, 1850-1897 (bulk 1858-1862).

Three letters signed from Brigham Young to Horace Eldredge dated Sept. 1, 1858; Oct. 20, 1858; and Nov. 20, 1858. In the first letter, he directs Eldredge to "the States" to purchase supplies for the Mormons. In the second letter he urges Eldredge in St. Louis to work towards the goal of gaining admission to the Union by encouraging emigration, pressing fellow Mormons to write for newspapers to promote pro-Mormon sentiment. He also writes about the trouble with the Indians caused by the Army in Salt Lake City, and fears that the Indians will start a war against all the residents in their area. He complains that a mail contract that they had wished for was forbidden by the Army, even though they offered to carry it themselves. The third letter also mentions his grievances against the Army, and mentions the law suits brought on by nearby civilians against the Mormons. Each letter is accompanied by a typed transcript. Accompanied by other correspondence, receipts, and printed material. There are five letters to Eldredge from his wife and business associates, dated 1850-1880; and two other seemingly unrelated letters. There are approximately 60 receipts from a business trip that Eldredge made for the Mormons in Salt Lake City, dated December 1861 to August 1862. These receipts are accompanied by two pages of accounts for various people (possibly emigrants) purchasing wagons, oxen, and horses. With a chattel mortgage from Frederick Miller to Peter Bersaw dated July 15, 1878, and various printed material including genealogical information provided by the dealer on the Eldredge family, and a typewritten biography of Eldredge's father Alanson, entitled "A Pioneer and Food Conservation," by Ben R. Eldredge.
